JISEON KIM

Jiseon Kim is a Korean visual communicator and multidisciplinary designer based in London and Seoul. She explores physical phenomena and social issues that are difficult to perceive through human eye. Among her projects, she conducts research on how humans exhibit certain characteristics when conceptualising ideas, particularly through projects that involve audience engagement. So naturally her research intersects at the crossroads of art, physics, philosophy, and media.

I’m not someone with a particularly unique or peculiar mindset. I’m simply a person with a lot of thoughts and many things I want to do. However, I gather what I consider my strength —the process of thinking itself—and package it into a small ball to toss it to others. This small ball may not immediately influence anyone, but I believe that this small gesture will eventually trigger someone’s new questions. I hope that my work serves as the starting point for awakening these questions.

Just as scientific theories once believed to be absolute truths can suddenly be overturned by new discoveries, individual perspectives, thoughts, and values also change day by day. When things that were socially accepted suddenly feel strange or discomforting, or when something profound is evoked by minor occurrences, our way of perceiving the world changes. These phenomena may sometimes be visible and sometimes not, and they may present themselves from different angles. These fragments of phenomena contribute to shaping how a person sees the world, and this world can change again as individuals transform.

My practice involves collecting these points of change to help the audience engage in self-reflection. I place value on enabling people to view someone else’s ordinary daily life from a different perspective. I ask question like, ‘My 0 is 1, but what is 0 to you?’ I strive to alter the senses and reasoning of modern individuals when it comes to their daily lives and make it easier for the audience to appreciate art.

For me, the most important thing is that people continue to think about my work not only in the moment of interaction but also long after they have turned away. I hope that everyone leaves with at least one question of their own. This, I believe, is the role of a visual communicator.

김지선은 런던과 한국을 베이스로 활동하는 한국인 비주얼커뮤니케이터, multidisciplinary 디자이너다. 그녀는 인간의 시각으로 확인하기 어려운 물리적 현상과 사회현상의 시각화를 주제로 다루고 있다. 그 중에서도 관객들을 작업에 참여시키는 작업을 통해 인간이 관념을 형상화할 때 어떠한 특징을 보이는지 연구하고 있으며 자연스레 그녀의 리서치는 미술, 물리학, 철학 그리고 미디어가 교차하는 지점에 위치해 있다.

저는 딱히 특별하거나 특이한 정신세계를 가진 사람은 아닙니다. 단지 생각이 많고 하고 싶은 게 많은 사람입니다. 다만 제가 잘한다고 생각하는 그 ‘생각 하는 과정’ 자체를 작은 공으로 뭉쳐서 사람들에게 던져 줄 뿐입니다. 이 작은 공은 당장 누군가에게는 아무런 영향을 끼치지 않을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 이 작은 움직임이 누군가의 또 다른 질문을 불러일으킬 것이라 믿습니다. 제 작업이 그 질문을 깨우기 위한 시발점이 되기를 바랍니다.

절대적 진리라 믿었던 과학 이론들도 새로운 발견에 의해 한순간에 뒤바뀔 수 있듯이, 개인의 관점, 생각, 가치관 역시 나날이 변화합니다. 사회적으로 당연하다고 느껴지던 것이 어느 순간 이상하게 느껴지거나 불쾌할 때, 혹은 사소한 현상에서 무언가가 연상될 때 우리가 세상을 바라보는 방식은 바뀌게 됩니다. 그것들은 때로는 눈에 보이고 때로는 그러지 않을 수 있습니다. 그것들은 앞면만 보일 수도 있고 뒷면만 보일 수도 있습니다. 이러한 현상의 조각들이 모여 한 사람이 세상을 보는 방식에 기여하며 그 세상은 또 다시 개인이 변화함에 따라 다르게 보일 수 있습니다.

저는 그 변화되는 지점을 모아 관객이 스스로 생각해보도록 돕는 작업을 합니다. 누군가의 평범한 일상을 다른 시선으로 바라볼 수 있게 하는 데에 가치를 둡니다. ‘나의 0은 1인데 당신에게 0은 무엇입니까?’ 와 같은 질문을 합니다. 일상을 대하는 현대인들의 감각과 사유를 변화시키고 관객들이 좀 더 쉽게 예술을 향유할 수 있도록 노력하고 있습니다.

저에게 있어서 가장 중요한 것은 사람들이 작업 앞에서 교감하는 그 순간이 아닌 뒤돌아서도 그들이 계속 그것에 대해 생각하는 것입니다. 모두가 자신의 질문을 하나쯤 갖고 갔으면 하는 바람입니다. 그리고 이것이 비주얼 커뮤니케이터로서 제 역할이라 생각합니다.
